Outdoor Learning

Outdoor learning means exactly that – giving every child in the school the chance to get out of the classroom and learn about the wonderful world around them.

At St. Uny C of E school we have excellent outdoor facilities which inspires our pupils and gives them a better understanding of the environment in which they live.

We have a 15m poly-tunnel that is a classroom as well as an excellent growing facility for pupils to grow many different plants from seeds, ready for planting out in our dedicated garden areas. There is also an outdoor classroom for use in the summer and autumn months.

There are 12 raised beds at the rear of the school, one for each class. Here children grow mainly flowers that they choose including sunflowers, which are part an inter-class competition.

We have a “Quiet Garden” where children can relax, reflect and enjoy the flowers.

We have an apple and cherry tree orchard where children can see the blossom and pick the apples in the autumn.

We have a wildlife pond with frogs, newts and many different insects. Pond dipping is available for classes from Y2 to Y6.

Although there is no longer an apiary at school, the subject of beekeeping is still covered in the classroom for a wider range of Key Stage 2 children.

A one hour illustrated presentation is given to Year 4 children each Spring term that covers the critical importance of bees and other pollinators to our food supply. Without them there would be no fruit of any kind available and many plant species would no longer exist. They see what goes on inside a bee hive and how the queen bee lays many thousands of eggs every week in the summer, creating a colony of up to 50,000 bees in one hive.

For Year 6 children  videos & workshops are now used to provide movie images of exactly what is involved in regular hive inspections. Our Outdoor Learning tutor is a fully qualified beekeeper and able to explain the life cycle of these really important insects.
