Introduction

Outdoor learning means exactly that – giving every child in the school the chance to get out of the classroom and learn about the wonderful world around them.

At St. Uny C of E school we have excellent outdoor facilities which inspires our pupils and gives them a better understanding of the environment in which they live.

We have a 15m poly-tunnel that is a classroom as well as an excellent growing facility for pupils to grow many different plants from seeds, ready for planting out in our dedicated garden areas. There is also an outdoor classroom for use in the summer and autumn months.

There are 12 raised beds at the rear of the school, one for each class. Here children grow mainly flowers that they choose including sunflowers, which are part an inter-class competition.

We have a “Quiet Garden” where children can relax, reflect and enjoy the flowers.

We have an apple and cherry tree orchard where children can see the blossom and pick the apples in the autumn.

We have a wildlife pond with frogs, newts and many different insects. Pond dipping is available for classes from Y2 to Y6.

We have an apiary at the far end of the field with at least four bee hives. All pupils from Year 4 upwards receive classroom teaching about the importance of bees to our food supply and ongoing health of the plant life on Earth. Year 6 children put on bee suits and come into the apiary to see bees in their hives at close range. They also help to extract the honey in September and see it put into jars.
