Modern Foreign Languages

Language learning will equip KS2 children with strategies to learn different languages and grammatical structures. It will give them a sense of the wider world that they live in and of different cultures and approaches to life. Language teaching will include oracy and literacy, and will focus on a practical approach to learning a different language. We want children to approach language learning with resilience, adaptability and enjoyment so that they are ready to move into KS3 with an open mind and a willingness to keep on learning.

EYFS and KS1 children will have opportunities to explore different languages alongside their theme and topic learning.

At St Uny we follow the KS2 scheme of work developed by the Lightbulb Languages team. The scheme of work for French can be found here in the link below.

This scheme follows the National Curriculum for MFL in KS2   - see the link below for more information.

Children with SEN are supported in languages lessons by the way that the skills are taught practically at first, with emphasis on working in groups and practising the language in a real life yet playful way.
Children support each other to practise the language orally. When language skills develop into literacy, children with SEN are supported with visual and pictorial reminders of vocabulary and spellings.
